Deadly volcano reawakens from decades of silence after killing 30,000 people in just minutes

Mount Pelee, one of the most lethal volcanoes in recorded history, is showing renewed activity after decades of silence. Located on Martinique, a Caribbean island about 1,500 miles southeast of Florida, it last erupted between 1929 and 1932. The 1902 eruption killed around 30,000 people in Saint-Pierre due to a pyroclastic flow. Recent seismic activity has increased, with 331 volcanic earthquakes recorded in July, including 124 in the week ending 31 July—nearly triple the previous week’s count. Ground deformation near the summit, measuring several inches of movement since May, suggests pressurised magma or fluids beneath the volcano. The alert level is YELLOW, indicating elevated unrest but no imminent eruption. Scientists note shallow quakes linked to superheated water and steam, while one deep tremor near the magma reservoir remains significant. A major eruption could threaten northern Martinique and disrupt Caribbean air travel, though officials have not issued warnings. Florida is not considered at direct risk. Observations continue to assess potential medium-term changes.
