Fontaines D.C. are back following their acclaimed fourth album Romance. Since its release, the band has achieved significant success, including headlining major festivals and selling hundreds of thousands of tickets to their shows. They have also seen commercial success. Now, they return with the first single from their upcoming fifth album, Dopamine Chamber, titled ‘Marianne’. This track builds on the slowed-down, heavy energy of previous songs like ‘Sundowner’ and ‘Starburster’. The music video, directed by Dave Myers and Cam Erikson, follows frontman Grian Chatten through a psychedelic world of excess and obsession, inspired by the 2024 thriller series Ripley. According to the band, Dopamine Chamber reflects the digital world where phones present both humanity’s worst aspects and memes simultaneously. While Romance was tinged with hope, the new album is described as more corrupted, with Chatten stating, ‘Romance was maybe 60% human and 40% corrupted by automation, a loss of feeling. This one feels more like 60% corrupted—the mask is wearing the face a little more.’ He felt it would be more powerful to leave hope out and reflect the ugliness honestly, calling it a ‘catastrophic warning.’ The album is set to drop on October 16th.
