Former addict gets Bath Spa honorary award for free haircuts

Former addict turned hairdresser Eddie Ilic, 32, has received an honorary doctorate from Bath Spa University for his work supporting the homeless community through free haircuts. Eddie Ilic struggled with addiction from the age of 12 and, after overcoming it 11 years ago, founded Eddie's Street Cuts—a charity offering free haircuts to homeless individuals across Bristol and Bath, in collaboration with other non-profit organizations. His award for social inclusion was given by Bath Spa University, recognizing his role as a model for students. Ilic shared that his recovery journey inspired him to help others, stating, 'Addiction is quite self-centred. We take and manipulate.' He started his initiative after noticing the struggles of homeless individuals with unkempt hair and suggested offering free haircuts at a nearby hostel. Initially providing haircuts every three weeks, his contributions gained recognition from other non-profits and hairdressers. He emphasized that haircuts not only improve appearance but also restore 'dignity and self-worth,' allowing him to share his story and support others in recovery. Ilic continues to be in recovery from drugs and alcohol, having faced legal troubles before joining a 12-step program at age 20. Bath Spa University described his story as one of 'resilience and transformation,' highlighting his example of making a difference through empathy and action.
