Godzilla Minus Zero stomps into Malaysian cinemas on Nov 5

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 5 — Godzilla Minus Zero has received an official Malaysian release date, with Toho Entertainment Asia announcing last night that the highly anticipated sequel will arrive in cinemas on November 5. The announcement was confirmed by local cinema chains GSC and TGV on social media, with both teasing the return of the King of the Monsters. The film will also screen in IMAX from November 5. Directed by Takashi Yamazaki, this is the direct sequel to Godzilla Minus One, which generated considerable excitement among fans in Malaysia and globally. Its latest teaser already amassed over 2.3 million views on YouTube. The announcement is significant for Malaysian audiences, as Godzilla Minus One did not receive a regular nationwide theatrical release. After debuting on Netflix Malaysia in June 2024, it received limited local big-screen screenings as part of the Japanese Film Festival 2024. The previous film was a critical and commercial success, becoming the highest-grossing Japanese-produced Godzilla film of all time and winning the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects, the franchise's first Oscar. In April, director Takashi Yamazaki stated in a social media video that he aimed to create another film that Godzilla fans would love. Excitement was evident on GSC and TGV’s social media pages following the announcement, with fans leaving comments like 'It's gonna be epic' alongside celebratory emojis. Malaysia’s enthusiasm for the iconic monster has been notable this year, particularly after Southeast Asia’s first permanent official Godzilla Store opened in January at Mitsui Shopping Park LaLaport BBCC in Kuala Lumpur. Besides Malaysia, Godzilla Minus Zero is scheduled for theatrical release in several Asian markets, including the Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, Laos, Indonesia, and Brunei. The film will feature Ryunosuke Kamiki returning as Koichi Shikishima and Minami Hamabe as Noriko Shikishima, with the story set two years after the events of the first film.
