Italy's film tourism generates €600M a year as 'Nolan effect' puts Favignana

Italy's film and television tourism industry generates around €600 million ($700 million) annually, attracting over 11 million day visits to locations featured in films and TV series. This sector, known as 'cineturismo,' contributes around 1.3 million overnight stays annually, significantly boosting Italy's visitor economy. The industry is shifting focus from individual productions to leveraging film exposure as part of a broader tourism strategy, connecting cinema with cultural, natural, and food-based travel experiences. Travelers increasingly seek destinations inspired by audiovisual content, with 29% of Italian travelers influenced by such influences in 2024, up from 25% the previous year. Prominent examples include Chianti, Montepulciano, and Mount Etna, which are part of 'set-jetting'—travel inspired by film locations. Christopher Nolan’s 'The Odyssey,' released in July 2026, has highlighted Favignana, the Egadi Islands, the Aeolian Islands, and Ostia as potential tourism hotspots. Initial projections suggest Favignana could generate $287 million in tourism revenue over three years, with longer-term estimates exceeding $500 million. The 'Nolan effect' is noted for transforming filming locations into sought-after destinations. Favignana’s tourism growth was already evident before 'The Odyssey,' with a 7% increase in 2025 visits. Italy’s Tourism Ministry emphasizes film tourism as a tool to promote lesser-known destinations, expand cultural heritage, and redirect tourism flows toward sustainable routes. The ministry supports promotional efforts to showcase filming locations alongside their cultural and culinary attractions.
