Jurors hear 'Keffe D' say his nephew fired fatal shots at Tupac Shakur in 1996 drive-by shooting

Jurors on Thursday heard Duane "Keffe D" Davis tell detectives in 2008 that his nephew Orlando "Baby Lane" Anderson fired the fatal shots that killed Tupac Shakur in 1996. Davis, accused of orchestrating the killing, said he was in the car with Anderson during the incident alongside hip-hop mogul Marion "Suge" Knight. At the time of the interview, Anderson had been dead for a decade. Davis described how the white Cadillac he and Anderson were riding in pulled up alongside a car with Shakur inside, along with Knight. "If we would have been on my side, I would have blasted," Davis said. Instead, Knight's car was on the other side, so Davis passed his gun back to Deandre "Big Dre" Smith, who did not want it. Anderson took the weapon and started firing, Davis claimed. Jurors watched the audio recording as Davis detailed the shooting. This was the first time he had publicly admitted his involvement in Shakur's murder. The interview is critical evidence in the state's case against Davis, who is accused of orchestrating the killing. Prosecutors emphasized Davis' own admissions in interviews, podcasts, and his 2019 memoir, "Compton Street Legend." Davis had previously told the FBI that Anderson was not involved in Shakur's 1996 shooting and speculated that Knight or Sean "Diddy" Combs were responsible. His lawyer argued that Davis' statements were fabricated and that authorities had not backed them up with evidence. Davis was initially a suspect in the 1997 murder of Shakur's rival, Notorious B.I.G., but was later cleared. Prosecutors allege Shakur was killed to avenge an earlier attack on Davis' nephew Anderson at the MGM Grand after a Mike Tyson fight. Davis was present at the fight but not the brawl. Later, they were in the Cadillac and saw Shakur hanging out of a black BMW with people calling out "Tupac!". Davis said after Lane fired the shots, he thought Knight was dead. Shakur's legacy as a cultural icon and influential rapper remains strong, having peaked in his lifetime and continued to grow posthumously.
