Karthik Subbaraj on 'Dorothy': Wanted to explore caste, masculinity, compassion through deeply human characters

Mumbai, Aug 5 (IANS) The title of Karthik Subbaraj’s next film, ‘Dorothy,’ was announced ahead of its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). Subbaraj, writer-director, expressed his intent to explore themes of identity, caste, masculinity, and compassion through deeply human characters, rather than spectacle. The film is set to release in theatres across India on September 25. ‘Dorothy’ is a Tamil-language feature film with an original score by legendary composer Ilaiyaraaja, marking his 1,540th film. The project is backed by Jio Studios and Sikhya Entertainment, and it will join TIFF’s acclaimed international program. Inspired by Indian highway truck art, the film’s poster reflects the spirit of the road and subtly foreshadows its narrative journey. The film stars Sananth, Rishikanth, and Keerthy Suresh in pivotal roles. Producers Guneet Monga Kapoor and Achin Jain, in association with Dhammam Films, emphasized the film’s universal appeal, stating that it finds grace and humanity in unexpected places. Jyoti Deshpande, President of Jio Studios, highlighted the film’s timeless human emotion amidst a tech-driven world. Karthik Subbaraj’s landmark 10th feature film, ‘Dorothy,’ will have its world premiere at the 2026 TIFF in the Centrepiece section, aiming to connect with audiences across cultures and borders.
