Katseye – Hootie Frutti

Sometimes I debate whether I should be covering Katseye at all on this blog. Despite emerging from HYBE, they’re not really ‘K-pop’ in any sense, and I haven’t enjoyed their music enough to feature it on a ‘global round-up’ post. Yet, their tracks satisfy the industry’s need for global engagement with their more aggressive, attention-grabbing style. With a song title like *Hootie Frutti*, I couldn’t resist writing about it. One thing I’ll confidently say about *Hootie Frutti* is that you’ll never forget what song you’re listening to while it’s playing. Katseye’s debut single opens with a playful, repetitive chorus of ‘hootie fruits’ and continues with dozens more over the next two minutes and twenty seconds. The song follows a *Green Eggs and Ham*-style structure, with lyrics like ‘Hootie Frutti on your tongue, Hootie Frutti every day, Hootie Frutti pandemic 2026.’ While the lyrics are intentionally silly and cringe-worthy, the production stands out. The beat is cartoonish yet has a strong, resonant lower end. The pre-chorus features a distinctive, garish synth that evokes an accordion’s polka-like accentuation. The song lacks a proper chorus, which detracts from its potential as a serious guilty pleasure. If the lyrics were replaced with something more polished and the chorus expanded, it could become a standout track. As it stands, *Hootie Frutti* is a skip, but the energy is undeniable—you’ll likely find yourself bopping along or even dancing a ridiculous jig while skipping it.
