Mourners gather en masse to bid poignant farewell to beloved Glen Hansard

In the run-up to Glen Hansard’s funeral, many wondered who would lead the chorus in his absence. The man who made other singers’ ceremonies singalong affairs was replaced by a raucous rendition of Bob Dylan’s 'Forever Young' as his simple wicker coffin was borne from St Patrick’s Cathedral on the shoulders of those closest to him. Music was ever present, but ultimately, heartache took precedence as a family grieved for a brother, husband, and father. Thousands gathered in Dublin for the funeral, with crowds watching on screens in St Patrick’s Park. Tribute came from The Frames, Markéta Irglová, Eddie Vedder, Bono, Colm Mac Con Iomaire, Lisa O’Neill, Breanndán Ó Beaglaoich, and even Patti Smith via a voice note. However, it was his brother’s voice that moved everyone most deeply. Gary, the brother, sang 'I Can See God' from the altar, evoking awe among the congregation. Outside the cathedral, many more gathered on the grass of St Patrick’s Park, where giant screens allowed people to pay their respects. Officials controlled access to the cathedral, directing latecomers to the park. Hansard’s accomplishments as a musician, activist, and social justice campaigner were noted, but his recent roles as husband and father were highlighted. During the service, gifts—including a guitar and a framed picture of Hansard with his wife Maire and son Christy—were placed at the altar. Maire spoke briefly, thanking responders for their aid after Hansard’s fatal motorcycle crash and praising his life’s pursuit of beauty and truth. She mentioned Christy, too young to attend, but whose bright spirit was with them. The ceremony ended with a bawdy rendition of 'Auld Triangle', leaving the cathedral’s environs packed with Dubliners giving Hansard a final round of applause.
