Brand New Day has become one of the biggest box-office successes in cinema history. Fourteen years after playing Tom Holland’s mother, Naomi Watts revealed she secretly joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe with an uncredited voice role as E.V.I.E., Peter Parker’s AI assistant in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Watts shared on Instagram that she voiced the character, lifting the lid on a previously undisclosed cameo. She wrote, ‘From playing your mom to playing your AI (100% human made),’ and shared a behind-the-scenes photo from a remote recording session with director Destin Daniel Cretton. The film, directed by Cretton, follows Peter Parker four years after No Way Home, living anonymously after Doctor Strange’s memory-wiping spell. Alongside Tom Holland, the film stars Zendaya, Sadie Sink, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal, Tramell Tillman, Michael Mando, and Mark Ruffalo. Watts’s MCU debut reunites her with Holland after The Impossible, where she played Maria Bennett. The film also marks a reunion with Cretton, who directed her in The Glass Castle, and with co-star Sadie Sink. Since its release on 31 July, Brand New Day has grossed over $1 billion worldwide in six days, becoming the second-fastest film to reach that milestone. The film received positive reviews, with The Independent’s Clarisse Loughrey praising it as the best MCU Spider-Man film since Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 2.
