Patrons ask Chelmsford City Racecourse to be honest over refunds

Patrons at Chelmsford City Racecourse have been frustrated by delays in refunds for cancelled events. Steve Austin, who booked four tickets for his son’s birthday celebration, has not received a refund despite the racecourse being closed since March due to the collapse of its previous tenant, Great Leighs Estates Limited (GLEL), which faced £30m in debts. Austin, who paid £300 for the tickets, expressed frustration over the lack of transparency and progress on refunds. The venue’s website states that refunds are being processed manually by a small team, causing ongoing delays. Additionally, staff have not been paid for several months, and while some refunds have been issued, further payments are still pending. A new operator, Arena Racing Company (ARC), has recently agreed to restart racing, pending approval from the British Horseracing Authority (BHA). Other patrons, like one who booked tickets for the Easter Festival, also faced issues with refunds, though some managed to recover their money through their bank. The racecourse’s website acknowledges the frustration but remains committed to fulfilling refunds promptly. The venue’s capacity was later reduced to 10,000 attendees due to past crowd management failures, raising safety concerns.
