Derry is the venue for Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann, a celebration of traditional Irish music, song, and dance. This year, the event is taking place during Derry’s year as UK City of Culture. Up to 300,000 visitors are expected in the city for this celebration, marking the first time Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann has been held in Northern Ireland. Musicians and music lovers from around the world have come to Derry, showcasing the global appeal of Irish traditional music. Christine Timm from New York has two sons competing at the Fleadh: Jake in fiddle and bodhrán competitions, and Dylan in banjo contests. The Derry streets were filled with music as buskers entertained crowds, adding to the festival atmosphere. Volunteers at the Fleadh office worked hard to find accommodation for thousands of visitors. Ríona Fitzpatrick, one of the volunteers, enjoyed the excitement generated by the festival. Peter McCarrick from the Sligo Fleadh Committee traveled to Derry to gather ideas for next year’s event in Sligo. Demand for Fleadh merchandise has been strong, with staff at the official festival shop struggling to keep up with demand. Ken Barrett noted that the city had fully embraced the Fleadh and the unique atmosphere it brought to Derry.
