FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 Asian Qualifiers - Window 4 kicks off later this week. Three key teams—Philippines, Iran, and Lebanon—will be missing key players due to injuries. The Philippines will lack Justin Brownlee, who has been recovering from multiple injuries, including a knee, hamstring, and ankle issue, ruling him out for the August 27–31 games. Brownlee, a prized winger, was expected to return for the fourth window but remains unfit, according to Coach Tim Cone. In Iran, Sina Vahedi, a star guard, suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury during the East Asia Super League Finals, leaving him out for at least 6–9 months. Vahedi, a member of the Asia Cup 2025 All-Star Five, was part of Iran’s strong First Round finish (5–1 record) but will miss the upcoming Window 4. Lebanon’s Wael Arakji, a former Asia Cup TISSOT MVP, also injured his ACL while playing for Al Riyadi in the Lebanese Basketball Championship Finals, forcing him out for the World Cup qualifiers. Arakji, 31, was a key player for his national team but will not be available for this round. The Philippines, meanwhile, have welcomed back Kai Sotto after a two-year absence, bolstering their roster with a rising star in Justin Arana. Coach Tim Cone continues to bring in new talent, aiming to strengthen their Group E lineup despite a recent 4-game losing streak. Iran, on the other hand, has announced Mohammad Amini as their new point guard, replacing Vahedi, while Lebanon’s Cedars have been relying on younger players like Jihad El Khatib, who was awarded Rising Star in the First Round. This absence of key players presents an opportunity for other stars to step up, especially given the critical nature of World Cup qualification.
